Mauricio Ruffy started the fight in a way that could have made Arman Tsarukyan’s night considerably more complicated. A clean right hand landed early, and the Brazilian immediately showed that he was not going to give Tsarukyan the space needed to settle into his preferred rhythm.
Tsarukyan did not stay in that range for long.
After absorbing the shot, he changed levels and went for a takedown. Ruffy defended well, stayed upright and used the cage to work his way out. There was no immediate finish. Instead, the fight began to reveal its basic shape: Ruffy wanted to keep the exchanges standing, while Tsarukyan was trying to close the distance and move the fight toward a range where his grappling could become a bigger factor.

Then everything changed.
In the final seconds of the opening round, the two fighters were locked together along the fence. Tsarukyan kept the pressure on despite Ruffy’s resistance. He did not need another takedown.
One elbow.
Then another.
At 4:56 of the first round, referee Jason Herzog stopped the fight after Ruffy was knocked unconscious. The official result: Tsarukyan won by knockout via elbows.

The finish matters partly because the decisive weapon was not the one most obviously associated with Tsarukyan’s game. Ruffy had defended the early takedown attempts effectively, and his opening exchanges had shown that he could pose a serious striking threat.
The fight ended in the pocket instead.
That makes it too simple to describe the performance as merely a wrestling victory or a striking victory. The fight was too short to reveal the full plan. What it did reveal was Tsarukyan’s ability to change the nature of the exchange when his first route was not immediately available, while continuing to apply pressure.
The stakes had already been significant before the opening bell. The matchup was being treated as an important fight in the lightweight title picture, with Tsarukyan entering on a five-fight winning streak and Ruffy looking to make a major jump by defeating one of the division’s established contenders.

Tsarukyan now has six straight victories. More importantly, the latest one did not require a scorecard. It came by first-round knockout, against a dangerous opponent, in a fight that had been expected to tell us more about where he stood among the division’s leading contenders.
Afterward, Tsarukyan called for a title opportunity. That request now sits within a larger division featuring champion Justin Gaethje and other fighters involved in the upper end of the lightweight rankings. The timing of any title fight, however, remains dependent on the UFC’s scheduling and matchmaking decisions.
The Los Angeles victory does not settle every question surrounding the lightweight belt.
It does settle one smaller question: Tsarukyan did not leave UFC 331 needing to explain a close decision or a narrow victory.
Two elbows, four seconds before the end of the first round, were enough.
Now the question moves somewhere else: when does the title opportunity come?
