Alexander Volkanovski ended Movsar Evloev’s unbeaten run with a second-round TKO in the UFC 333 main event in Abu Dhabi, successfully defending his featherweight championship against an opponent who had never previously lost a professional MMA fight. At 38, the Australian secured a victory that renews the debate over his place in the division’s history while demonstrating his ability to overcome one of its most demanding tactical challenges.
Only six seconds remained in the second round when referee Marc Goddard stepped in to stop the fight. At Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, October 24, 2026, Alexander Volkanovski had dropped Movsar Evloev before following him to the canvas with a succession of ground strikes. The Australian champion had just brought an unbeaten professional career to an end.
The stoppage, officially recorded at 4:54 of the second round, improved Volkanovski’s record to 29 victories and four defeats. For Evloev, it marked the first loss of a professional career that now stands at 20 wins and one defeat.
The Russian had entered the contest with considerable credentials. Since joining the UFC in 2019, he had accumulated ten consecutive victories, all by decision. His ability to impose his wrestling, maintain constant pressure and dictate the pace of his opponents had established him as one of the division’s most credible title contenders.

Volkanovski, meanwhile, entered this title defence in an unusual position.
Considered the underdog before the fight, the Australian needed to demonstrate that reclaiming the championship and subsequently defeating Diego Lopes again represented sustained competitive excellence rather than success against one particular opponent.
The opening round offered no immediate answer.
Evloev attempted to establish his wrestling and secured several takedowns. Volkanovski repeatedly worked his way back to his feet, preventing the Russian from converting those sequences into extended periods of ground control. In the striking exchanges, the champion displayed a noticeable speed advantage, although Evloev still managed to produce offensive moments of his own.

Volkanovski returned to his corner with swelling and a cut beneath his left eye. The contest remained competitive, particularly given that Evloev had built much of his success around accumulating work across successive rounds rather than pursuing early finishes.
The second round initially followed a similar pattern before Volkanovski began finding clearer openings.
A right hand connected and disrupted Evloev’s balance. The Russian retreated in an attempt to escape the exchange, but the Australian continued pressing forward with further strikes until his opponent fell to the canvas.
Volkanovski immediately followed him down and unleashed a series of ground strikes. Evloev attempted to protect himself but could not halt the offensive. Goddard intervened, bringing the contest to an end at 4:54.

It was the first defeat of Evloev’s professional career.
The manner in which Volkanovski secured the finish deserves as much attention as the result itself. The champion did not need to outperform Evloev in his strongest discipline. Instead, he reduced the effectiveness of the Russian’s wrestling, limited his opportunities for sustained ground control and used his speed and boxing to steer the fight towards exchanges in which he could inflict greater damage.
Evloev had built his UFC record on winning rounds and convincing judges. On this occasion, the contest never reached the scorecards.
Aldo’s record returns to the conversation as Volkanovski leaves his future open
The significance of the victory extends beyond another successful title defence. Volkanovski has now recorded three consecutive wins, following his two performances against Diego Lopes, further consolidating his position at the top of the featherweight division during his second championship reign.

The result has also revived the historical comparison between the Australian and José Aldo, one of the defining champions of the weight class.
There is, however, a statistical distinction worth preserving. UFC coverage presents Volkanovski as having surpassed Aldo in featherweight title-fight victories, while the Associated Press lists both fighters with nine wins. Differences in how championship bouts are counted should therefore be considered before presenting the figure as an undisputed historical record.
Beyond that statistical question, the latest victory carries additional weight when viewed against the Australian’s recent career.
In February 2024, Volkanovski lost his featherweight championship to Ilia Topuria, months after suffering a knockout defeat against Islam Makhachev in a lightweight contest.
Those two losses raised questions about whether he could return to the level that had made him one of the most consistent champions in featherweight history.
He eventually reclaimed the belt against Diego Lopes at UFC 314 before successfully defending it in their second meeting. Defeating Evloev now adds a distinctly different opponent to that sequence.
The Russian arrived unbeaten, relying on an approach built primarily around wrestling and sustained pressure rather than striking exchanges. Volkanovski was therefore facing more than another opportunity to repeat his previous performance. He had to solve a different tactical problem, one that tested his takedown defence and his ability to adapt during the fight.
Following the announcement of the result, the champion spoke to Daniel Cormier about his future.
Volkanovski explained that he did not feel compelled to continue competing, although his desire to fight remained as long as he could emerge from his contests without sustaining excessive physical damage.
According to comments reported by Reuters, he had previously made the continuation of his career dependent on the condition in which he emerged from this particular fight. His victory in Abu Dhabi left that possibility open.
Evloev, for his part, did not look for excuses following his first professional defeat. He acknowledged the quality of his opponent and described sharing the Octagon with Volkanovski as an honour.
The loss interrupts a lengthy winning streak without erasing the performances that earned him a championship opportunity. How he responds, and what adjustments he makes to his approach, will now form part of the assessment of his position among the division’s leading contenders.
Volkanovski has announced neither his retirement nor his next opponent. He expressed satisfaction at having faced a clearly established number-one contender and welcomed the emergence of new fighters seeking opportunities to challenge for the championship.
The Australian leaves Abu Dhabi still holding the featherweight belt, having settled a scheduled five-round contest in less than two rounds.
The next stage of his second championship reign will depend, in part, on the considerations he raised himself after the fight: his physical condition, his willingness to continue and the challenges the featherweight division can still offer him.
