Tybura had no time to think about a rematch, as they were given the chance to fight, and Spivak seized the opportunity to avenge his loss by unanimous decision from February 2020.
The fight started with Spivak on his back early on, but he quickly transitioned into an attacking position and tightly gripped Tybura’s arm, forcing him to submit swiftly. Spivak’s submission move marked the first in the UFC heavyweight division since Fabricio Werdum made Alexander Gustafsson tap out four years ago.
Spivak expressed his feelings post-fight to UFC commentator Michael Bisping through a translator, saying, “I’ve trained this move a lot. To be honest, I was very nervous because I couldn’t train during the last few weeks due to an injury.”
He added, “This was my time, and this is my moment.”
With this victory, Spivak achieves his 15th win out of 17 professional fights, including his 11th first-round finish. His record improves to 17-5, recovering from his loss to Ciryl Gane in September. His only losses in the past three years were against former interim champion Gane and current interim champion Tom Aspinall. Spivak is expected to move up to the eighth position in the official UFC heavyweight rankings after this win and has called for a fight against a higher-ranked competitor.
On the other hand, Tybura (25-9) entered the fight in great shape. His previous win over Spivak in 2020 was the beginning of an 8-2 streak, including a first-round submission victory over Tai Tuivasa in his last appearance.
