The IBJJF Floripa Fall Open 2023 took place across the weekend of May 20th and 21st, and the event saw plenty of high-level BJJ action throughout. Fratres Jiu-Jitsu left with a ton of medals from the adult black belt divisions, with a fair amount of them coming from the recent influx of 8 elite grapplers who left Dream Art to join them. The team dominated in the featherweight division, where Lucas Maquine won a gold medal and Meyram Maquine settled for silver. Meyram came back again later on the first day though, putting in an impressive performance for a lighter competitor to win a bronze medal in the gi absolute division.
In a surprising turn of events three brothers representing Fratres Jiu-Jitsu stood on the podium in the super-heavyweight division, with Anderson Munis taking home gold, Alex Munis taking home silver, and Erich Munis earning a bronze medal. That was actually the first of two bronze medals that Erich won, as he took another from the absolute. There were a few high-profile female grapplers competing as well, with Maria Claudia putting in a really good performance to win gold in one of the busiest divisions at lightweight. Meanwhile the roosterweight default gold-medallist Jessica Dantas entered the absolute as the lightest competitor and emerged with a bronze medal after a valiant effort.
Gracie Barra black belt Servio Tulio had a great weekend too, as he won a pair of gold medals in the medium-heavyweight division against some tough opposition both in the gi and in no gi. The second day was significantly quieter than the first day, likely owing to the fact that gi competition is far more popular in Brazil. There was several fun matches on both days regardless though, as the IBJJF Floripa Fall Open 2023 attracted some of the best grapplers from all around Brazil to compete.
