Tom Aspinall thinks that Francis Ngannou’s style may pose more problems for Tyson Fury than a traditional boxer like Anthony Joshua would be capable of.
Tom Aspinall, who is currently the fourth heavyweight contender in the UFC, has been working with Fury to prepare the undefeated boxing champion for his showdown with Ngannou in October. The “Predator” will make his boxing debut after leaving the UFC earlier this year and signing a contract with the PFL.
Aspinall recently spoke with Anthony Smith and Michael Bisping on the latter’s YouTube channel to discuss the matchup. When asked about Francis Ngannou’s punching power compared to Deontay Wilder’s, the UFC heavyweight made an interesting observation.
Tom Aspinall sees Francis Ngannou as a bigger challenge for Tyson Fury than Anthony Joshua
“Well, if you want an internal training analysis,” Aspinall began, “you see, someone like Tyson is a bit stronger than Wilder. You see, someone like Tyson who’s boxed his whole life, or any boxer who’s boxed his whole life, a lot of boxers fight very similarly… It’s not much different, especially if you go through the amateur circuit and you go all the way to the Olympic route and all that kind of stuff. A lot of these guys have very, very similar styles.
Fury has been flawless in his professional boxing career except for a draw in 2018 in his first fight against Wilder. However, Aspinall suggests Ngannou is a unique challenge for ‘The Gypsy King’ because he doesn’t come from a traditional boxing background.
“When you throw someone like Deontay Wilder, like Francis Ngannou throwing looping punches and uppercuts and doing all sorts of unorthodox things, boxers aren’t as used to it as they would like for example, if Tyson Fury was boxing against Anthony Joshua, it would be the easiest fight ever for him. It would be the easiest fight of his life, because it is so basic… It will be much more difficult for a traditional boxer to face someone less orthodox. So I think Francis will bring a little more trouble to Tyson Fury than an Anthony Joshua.”
