American fighter Dustin Poirier has revealed an incident where he almost got into a brawl with his Irish rival, Conor McGregor, outside the octagon.
The relationship between Poirier and McGregor has always been tense, following three fights in their UFC history. McGregor won the first by knockout in 2014, while Poirier avenged himself in the next two matches, securing back-to-back victories in 2021.
Tension at the Las Vegas Convention Center
During an interview with Ariel Helwani, Poirier shared the details of the incident that took place at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
He said: “I had just finished signing autographs, and Conor was behind me without me noticing. Suddenly, my agent grabbed my shoulder to stop me.
It was very close to turning into a real confrontation. We have a long and complicated history, and we haven’t settled things yet.”
The possibility of a new showdown
Poirier added: “If our eyes had met at that moment, we would have fought right away. Things are still tense between us, and everything that happened in the past hasn’t been forgotten.” While Poirier looks for a new fight after his defeat to Islam Makhachev, the possibility of facing McGregor again remains, especially after the Irishman’s absence from the octagon for over three years.
Could there be a new fight between Poirier and McGregor? Time will tell, but the tension between the fighters remains high.
