Las Vegas – South Korean fighter Hyun Sung Park made a strong impression at UFC Vegas 106, finishing Carlos Hernandez in the first round with a rear-naked choke in the only flyweight bout of the event.
Though it wasn’t part of the original plan, Park capitalized on the ground opportunity. Speaking to the media, he said: “The game plan was great, but I saw an opening on the ground and went for the choke.”
His submission was one of six finishes on the preliminary card. While he didn’t earn a post-fight bonus, Park caught attention with a callout to Matt Schnell.
When asked why Schnell, Park explained: “It was just a random name that came to mind. I’ve got nothing against him. He’s half-Korean, I was following him. He’s a great fighter, and I’d love to face him.”
Schnell, whose father and grandmother are Korean, previously competed in South Korea at UFC Busan in 2019.
Despite strong performances inside the octagon, Park’s main struggle has been staying active—due to injuries and opponents missing weight.
“I just want to fight,” Park said. “I just need a bit of luck to get things going.”
