Defeated this Saturday evening by Khamzat Chimaev, Kamaru Usman reacts to his defeat and already mentions the name of his potential future opponent.
Times have been tough for Kamaru Usman for a little over a year. The Nigerian was stripped of his welterweight title by Leon Edwards in 2022.
He then tried to regain his belt last March, but lost the decision. Kamaru Usman suffered a third consecutive defeat this Saturday against Khamzat Chimaev in -84kg.
And this, by delivering a great performance with only 10 days of preparation. But this series of defeats begins to run through the head of ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’:
“You lose two very close fights like that, you start to ask yourself questions,” he declared on ESPN MMA after his fight.

Kamaru Usman wants to continue in -84kg
Usman then spoke a little more about his future and targeted the name of his future opponent: “I will take Dricus du Plessis as co-main event of UFC 300. Why not? » He confided after his defeat. Usman therefore intends to continue at middleweights.
We knew that he already coveted the title of this category when he was the -77kg champion.
However, he was reluctant to go up and seek the title, because his colleague Israel Adesanya was the champion in -84kg. Since then, ‘Izzy’ has been stripped of his title by Sean Strickland. The path seems more open for Usman now. The former welterweight champion is therefore targeting a return for the month of April 2024.
