UFC middleweight Jared Cannonier has announced his willingness to face rising star Khamzat Chimaev.
Following an impressive performance at UFC Vegas 75 against Marvin Vettori, “The Killa Gorilla” interacted with the media during the post-fight press conference. At one point, the 39-year-old fighter was asked what he thought of a possible fight against Khamzat Chimaev. Indeed, the American is ready to accept any challenge, but conditions must be met.
Khamzat Chimaev must respond
Cannonier said he would be open to a fight against “Borz” only if a win against him gives the 39-year-old a chance at UFC gold:
“He’s not even ranked middleweight, is he? I know he is popular. Everyone wants to see him do his thing, etc. If they called me and said, ‘Hey, Khamzat for the contender [number one] match? It’s a yes. I’m trying to get the title. I don’t just fight to entertain you. I know you want to see it. I know it will be a good fight. If this fight allows me to get the title, yes. I just beat number three, I’m not looking back, I’m looking forward. If Dana [White] and Hunter [Campbell] say Khamzat is between you and the champ, we can talk about it,” Jared Cannonier said.
Cannonier faced Marvin Vettori in a five-round bout in the main event of UFC Vegas 75. The ‘Killa Gorilla’ put on a punching display and also set the record for most strikes (241) thrown into a middleweight fight. Even champion Israel Adesanya reacted to his performance.
Cannonier won by unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring 49-45, 49-45 and 48-46 in his favor.
