Islam Makhachev shatters Dustin Poirier’s dream and keeps his crown

In the main event of UFC 302, Islam Makhachev attempted to defend his lightweight title against Dustin Poirier. The Dagestani won by submission.

Round 1: Very easily, Makhachev takes the challenger to the ground. The Dagestani takes a dominant position on Poirier, who finds himself on his back.

In an uncomfortable position, ‘The Diamond’ almost gets submitted in a kimura… Islam Makhachev recomposes and locks a body triangle. However, the champion is unable to place the rear choke.

Round 2: Dustin Poirier defends all opponent takedown attempts and manages to stay standing. The Louisianan exchanges strikes with the champion and manages to do interesting things. At the end of the recovery, Makhachev validates a takedown.

Round 3: The champion validates a takedown on the American and takes his back. On the ground, Makhachev locks in a body triangle and looks for the rear choke. The two athletes get up and exchange standing. ‘The Diamond’ is starting to have a scar on his face.

Round 4: Makhachev sends a nice combination that destabilizes Dustin Poirier. In the process, the champion looks for the takedown.

The Dagestani takes his opponent’s back and tries to evolve… But ‘The Diamond’ gets out of the trap and gets up with big body blows on Islam Makhachev.

Round 5: Bloody on the face, Makhachev seems physically damaged and tries to bring the fight to the ground. He manages to catch the challenger in a D’arce choke and make Poirier tap!

Islam Makhachev, nicknamed “The Wolf,” is known for his superior fighting skills and tight control on the ring floor.

Islam Makhachev therefore won by submission in the 5th round and retained his lightweight belt. The Russian champion has declared his aim for the welterweight title, currently held by Leon Edwards.

For his part, Dustin Poirier once again failed in his quest for the crown. For the third time, he lost in a title shot…
