UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev could be on the eve of a “red panties night” against Conor McGregor.
Islam Makhachev will defend his UFC lightweight title against Dustin Poirier at UFC 302 in Newark. He returns after knocking out Alexander Volkanovski with a head kick in his last title defense in October. Conor McGregor, meanwhile, will make his return at UFC 303 a few weeks later against Michael Chandler. He has not fought since breaking his leg against Poirier at UFC 264 in 2021. McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov, Makhachev’s longtime friend and mentor, have had one of the longest rivalries most intense in UFC history. Nurmagomedov silenced Conor McGregor by submitting him at UFC 229. Makhachev is now on the throne of Dagestan and the UFC, and he is ready to face McGregor if they both win their next fights.
Islam Makhachev hints at Conor McGregor fight after UFC 302
During a recent appearance on the Pound 4 Pound podcast, Islam Makhachev discussed a possible fight against Conor McGregor following a victory over Dustin Poirier at UFC 302.
“Dustin Poirier finished Conor twice, bro, anyone can finish Conor ten times,” Makhachev said. ” Why not do it ? People must be stupid to say no. Of course I will fight him. I will fight in October or November, [or] I can fight in August or September with McGregor. »
McGregor’s next return will be at 77kg, a division Makhachev has hinted he wants to move up to in recent months. He was briefly linked to a champion vs. champion fight at UFC 300 against Leon Edwards before negotiations fell through. Makhachev focuses on Poirier for his next lightweight title defense. After that, he could turn his attention to McGregor, depending on the outcome of UFC 303.
