Reigning UFC lightweight world champion Islam Makhachev is aiming to add a second belt to his collection.
In October, at UFC 280, Islam Makhachev rose to the top of the lightweights by submitting Charles Oliveira in the second round. Since then, the Dagestani has successfully defended his title against featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski.
Speaking to UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier on “The DC Check-In,” Islam Makhachev made a revelation. Indeed, the native of Makhachkala dreams of obtaining a second belt, more precisely that of the king of welterweights, Leon Edwards.
“It’s my dream and I’m sure I can be a double champion. I can beat Leon Edwards. Anywhere, I can beat this guy in any area,” the lightweight champion said.
If Islam Makhachev wants the king’s head at welterweight, he will probably have to wait a bit. Indeed, a long list of suitors are lining up to try to shine. With his decisive win over Gilbert Burns, Belal Muhammad established himself as the most deserving contender. However, Colby Covington, still ranked No. 2 in the division, should be the next to challenge Leon Edwards.
