Georges St-Pierre, for his return to the grappling grounds, would like to face big names in MMA. Here is who.
Georges St-Pierre surprised everyone last week by announcing his return to competition, not in MMA, but in grappling, during the UFC Fight Pass Invitational 6 on December 14. The man who retired from MMA in 2017 and who now trains sometimes with Elon Musk, boss of Tesla and Twitter, returned to this comeback during Ariel Helwani’s show, The MMA Hour:
“The thing is, I love jiu-jitsu, I love grappling. It’s also a sport that I think is accessible to more people, to a wider range of people. Not everyone wants to compete in MMA, because they don’t want to suffer brain damage.
But grappling is a sport accessible to a much wider audience. When the UFC told me they wanted to get into this, I wanted to be part of their promotion, try to help the sport grow. I think they start small, but eventually the shows will be in big arenas. It’s my aim. I want to help the organization achieve this goal. »
If we know the date of the return of GSP, we do not yet know his opponent, or even the categories and the rules, but he thinks that the most important thing for people is the opponent he will have :
“We don’t know the rules. I am not in competition. I’m not trying to be world champion here. The mindset is different from the one I had when I was competing in MMA. I compete for fun. Of course, I’m a very competitive person and I’ll do my best, but I think it will be better for me, for the public, for everyone if I’m up against an opponent, maybe another MMA veteran. or someone who comes from the MMA world, not someone who comes from the grappling world. I think it would be better for me and for the promotion. »
