Dustin Poirier has only one idea in mind: to get the lightweight title held by Islam Makhachev and he already sees himself there.
Dustin Poirier knows it well, the winner of the fight between Beneil Dariush and Charles Oliveria at UFC 289, will likely have his chance against reigning lightweight champion Islam Makhachev next.
However, Dustin Poirier still intends to go for this title, and for that, he will have to go through the Justin Gaethje box at UFC 291 in July. This fight will also see the BMF belt put back into play (Dana White explains why here). Absent since his victory against Michael Chandler at UFC 281, Poirier will be keen to prove that we can always count on him.
Also, he wanted to affirm his vision on his future (via MMA Junkie):
“I think the winner of this fight between me and Justin Gaethje is next in line for the title after the winner of Charles Oliveira vs Beneil Dariush. I can’t deny that Beneil deserves it. If he goes there against Oliveira and gets his hand up at UFC 289, come on… This guy has done so much. He deserves a chance to win that belt. But my goal is to have all the belts. I would have an interim belt, a BMF belt and an undisputed belt. Let’s go !”
Islam Makhachev does not yet have an official fight scheduled. He hasn’t returned to the Octagon since his victory over Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284 last February. But he should logically fight at UFC 294 in October.
Do you think we will see a fight between Dustin Poirier and Islam Makhachev in 2024?
