Daniel Cormier apologizes to Francis Ngannou after ‘crazy turn of events’ landing Tyson Fury bout

Daniel Cormier has backtracked on his comments to former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou and publicly apologizes.

In the weeks since his departure, longtime UFC fighters have criticized the move, saying Francis Ngannou “made a mistake” in leaving MMA’s top promotion. Others thought “The Predator” should swallow his pride and beg Dana White to give him his job back. Then Ngannou made fun of them all by signing a landmark deal with PFL MMA that includes a slice of the ownership pie. Also, Ngannou will face WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury for an obscene fee later this year in Saudi Arabia. Daniel Cormier wanted to apologize.

Daniel Cormier congratulates Francis Ngannou

“First of all, I’m sorry, Francis,” former UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier said on his “DC & RC” show on ESPN. “I want to check your bag too, Francis. Can I ask you a question ? Do you have to be a little naive to jump into this world and know your worth to the point of telling yourself, when things look bleak, that you have to be loyal and tell yourself this is going to happen for me? It is true that the situation was grim for a while.“

Despite the value of his name and his accomplishments in the UFC, rival promotions with smaller pockets were unable to write checks large enough to satisfy Francis Ngannou. Those who could insisted that the 36-year-old ‘Predator’ had too much power outside the cage (a claim Ngannou later disputed). However, his manager revealed that he will be on a huge payday against Tyson Fury.

“He’s going to make more money than he could have ever imagined making in his entire life because, guess what? They are fighting in Saudi Arabia, which somehow just literally bought the PGA,” Cormier continued. “Francis and Tyson Fury are going to make a lot of money. It’s a completely crazy turn of events for Francis Ngannou, but we’re both incredibly happy for him. I want to be wrong in this situation. I’m glad he gets paid that way.”
