After his impressive win over Robert Whittaker at UFC 308, Khamzat Chimaev has caught the attention of one of the UFC champions, sparking anticipation for a potential clash.
In the co-main event of UFC 308 in Abu Dhabi, Khamzat Chimaev (14-0) silenced his critics with a spectacular performance. Known for his aggressive fighting style and quick finishes, Chimaev made quick work of Robert Whittaker (27-8) in his middleweight debut.
This remarkable victory has propelled him into the top three in the middleweight division (under 84 kg). Now, the 30-year-old Chechen fighter has set his sights on the middleweight title currently held by South African Driscus Du Plessis (22-2). According to Du Plessis, Chimaev could be his next challenger.
Du Plessis Wants to Face Khamzat Chimaev
While Dana White, UFC president, has indicated that Sean Strickland is next in line to face Driscus Du Plessis, the South African champion is more interested in fighting Chimaev.
“As a fan of this sport and as the middleweight champion, this fight excites me more, especially since Chimaev is undefeated. I’ve beaten Strickland before, and I know I can do it again.”
Du Plessis added, “Fighting Chimaev excites me, and I believe fans around the world want to see this fight. They pay to see these kinds of matches, so what the fans want is what I want. The Khamzat Chimaev fight is what I want 100%, and I’m sure UFC will make it happen.”
Sean Strickland’s Response
Despite the buzz, Sean Strickland announced his position through social media, affirming that he’s next in line to face Du Plessis. “Understand one thing… I’m next in line… it’s been said, it’s written… in January or February, I’ll face Driscus Du Plessis.
Go back to Chechnya and wait a bit… sorry, I mean the UAE now since you’re no longer welcome in Chechnya.”
If this anticipated clash between Chimaev and Du Plessis is confirmed, UFC fans might witness one of the most thrilling matchups, bringing Chimaev closer to his first title.
