Chakib Benmoussa’s Decision to Approve the Boxing Federation: Ignoring Royal Demands or a Step Toward Reform? Does It Reflect Failure or Offer a New Opportunity?

Following the disappointing performances of Moroccan boxing at the Paris 2024 Olympics, the Moroccan public has been left questioning the direction of the sport and the decision-making at the highest levels.

The Moroccan boxing team’s performance at these Games marked an unprecedented decline, leaving fans and critics in disbelief.

With high hopes, Morocco entered the competition with three female boxers: Khadija El Mardi in the under 75 kg category, Widad Bertal in the under 54 kg category, and Yasmine Metki in the under 50 kg category. Unfortunately, none of them advanced to the final rounds, leading to significant disappointment among supporters and followers.

The absence of Moroccan male boxers from the Olympic events caused widespread discontent among Moroccan fans, who viewed this as a severe disappointment, given the historical achievements of Moroccan boxing.

In its Olympic history, Morocco has previously excelled in boxing, winning four bronze medals.

Amidst this backdrop of failure, the recent decision by Minister of National Education, Preschool, and Sports Chakib Benmoussa to approve the Moroccan Royal Boxing Federation’s (FRMB) activities has sparked controversy. The decision, published in the official gazette, authorizes the federation to exercise its powers and enjoy its allocated privileges.

This approval coincides with the disastrous performance of Moroccan boxing at the Paris Olympics, fueling public dissatisfaction. The fact that the sport, which once proudly represented the nation at the Olympics, failed to perform in Paris has amplified the debate.

Benmoussa’s decision means the endorsement of the FRMB’s financial and administrative reports, allowing it to receive future financial support and grants from the ministry, despite the lackluster Olympic results.

This decision raises critical questions: Is it a sign of ignoring royal demands for change and the appointment of capable individuals? Or does it represent an opportunity for reform and a chance to rebuild Moroccan boxing’s reputation?
