Jackie Buntan picked up a shock victory against Algeria’s veteran kickboxing star Anissa Meksen at ONE Championship event ONE 169: Malykhin vs Reug Reug.
With the memorable victory, the Filipino-American claimed the inaugural ONE Women’s Strawweight Kickboxing world title inside Bangkok’s Lumpinee Stadium.
Meksen controlled the first two rounds, throwing leg kicks, jabs, and straight punches. Momentum shifted towards the end of the second round as Buntan connected with a boxing combination.
From there, the 27-year-old landed body shots and hooks as Meksen couldn’t find openings despite adjusting her style. Buntan kept applying pressure, hitting Meksen’s head and body.
Buntan’s historic unanimous decision win takes her record to 27-6 while Meksen’s overall record falls to 103-7.
Despite starting her ONE career with three victories, this is the second time Meksen fails to win a belt in ONE Championship.
- The 36-year-old had suffered her first promotional loss at the hands of Phetjeeja who was crowned as ONE Atomweight Kickboxing world champion back in December 2023.
