Amir Aliakbari vs Marcus Almeida at ONE 169: Four Keys to Victory

Amir Aliakbari and Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida are set to face each other in a pivotal clash at ONE 169: Malykhin vs. ReugReug that could decide the next challenger for the ONE Heavyweight MMA world title.

The highly anticipated contest is set to take place inside Bangkok’s Lumpinee Stadium at the show that kicks off at 3:00 AM Mecca on Saturday, 9 November.

Here are four keys to victory in the clash of heavyweights between “Buchecha” and Aliakbari.

1. Buchecha’s Submission Expertise

Marcus Almeida picked up three of his four MMA wins via submission – which is hardly a surprise given his versatile submission game.

The experienced Brazilian is a legendary 17-time BJJ World Champion can beat any competitor with a diversified ground game, locking different kinds of submissions to submit his opponents.

However, Almeida will have to be on the top of his game to take down and hold on to Aliakbari as the latter is also experienced in grappling and is a Greco-Roman wrestling world champion.

2. Aliakbari’s Ground Strikes

While the Brazilian world-class BJJ competitor may be the favorite in the ground game, Aliakbari could try to power himself into the top position from which he can hit his opponent with massive ground strikes.

The 36-year-old is a ruthless finisher from the top position, applying his trademark crucifix position to secure two big finishes in ONE Championship.

3. Buchecha’s Evolving Stand-Up Game

While the Brazilian’s BJJ skills are his most impressive, he has also shown an evolving stand-up arsenal in his last fight.

Despite losing to “Reug Reug”, Almeida displayed kickboxing skills and a willingness to trade direct strikes with the Senegalese star.

Although Aliakbari may be the more well-versed striker between the two, “Buchecha” can use his newly acquired striking skills to open up more opportunities to score a takedown.

4. Aliakbari’s One-Punch Power

Aliakbari’s show-stopping punching power poses a serious threat to any competitor in the world – and it could be the difference-maker.

Aliakbari’s top striking skills will likely push the Brazilian on the back foot and the latter will need to find ways to avoid Iran’s big punches.
