Corruption Scandal in Moroccan Taekwondo: A Call for Transparency and Accountability

The investigating judge at the El Jadida Court of First Instance has recently ordered the trial of the president of the Casablanca-Settat Taekwondo League and its treasurer, both to be prosecuted while on bail. According to the newspaper Assabah, their trial is set for April 10.

This decision follows a thorough investigation that led the judge to conclude their involvement in embezzlement and breach of fiduciary duty, in accordance with Article 547 of the Moroccan Penal Code.

The case emerged after a complaint was filed by a member of the regional league’s board of directors, accusing the officials of failing to hold a general assembly since 2018 and neglecting to submit financial records for independent auditing.

The investigation revealed that the accused were selling belt certificates to affiliated clubs without depositing the collected funds into the league’s bank account. Witnesses testified to these practices in court, further reinforcing the charges against them.

This case raises critical questions:

  • Why do sports federations operate without real and effective oversight?
  • Should those responsible for supervising sports governance also be held accountable for their inaction?
  • Could this case set a precedent for greater transparency in Moroccan sports management?

Public opinion now awaits an impartial and rigorous judicial process, ensuring that this case is not just an isolated incident but the beginning of genuine reform in sports governance in Morocco.
