Alex Pereira wins light heavyweight title with TKO of Jiri Prochazka

In the main event of UFC 295, Jiri Prochazka and Alex Pereira faced each other for the light heavyweight title. The Brazilian won by knockout in the 2nd round.

Round 1: Pereira’s low kicks hurt the Czech. In a complicated situation, Prochazka is caught in a semblance of a guillotine… But ‘BJP’ escapes from the trap and takes the fight to the ground. On his back, Alex Pereira suffers, and manages to get up at the end of the recovery.

Round 2: With a very low guard and being very mobile, Jiri Prochazka thwarts the Brazilian. The two athletes go to war and ‘BJP’ continues. The Czech advances and deploys a very offensive game. In a crazy sequence, Prochazka is countered by Pereira. In the clinch, the Czech was surprised by good elbows from ‘Poatan’. Jiri Prochazka loses his lucidity and forces the referee to stop the fight.

Pereira again showed the continuing evolution of his young MMA career, managing to survive on the ground when Prochazka landed a takedown in Round 1. Before the end of the round, Pereira worked his way back to the feet and continued to land solid leg kicks that were clearly affecting Prochazka, who had previously won the light heavyweight title before suffering a shoulder injury that forced him to vacate the belt.

With the win, Pereira matched his accomplishments in Glory Kickboxing, winning a championship in two weight classes.

While Pereira called out rival Israel Adesanya, whom he defeated twice in kickboxing and once in the UFC to win the middleweight title before Adesanya won the UFC rematch to regain the gold, his next fight will be a defense against Jamahal Hill, who was forced to vacate the title after suffering a knee injury in a basketball game during International Fight Week.

The referee’s stoppage initially appeared to verge on too early. Despite the potential controversy, Prochazka did not dispute the decision.

“In the end, I think it was right,” Prochazka said after the fight. “I was out.”

Alex Pereira wins the UFC light heavyweight title. This is his second belt won in the organization, after the middleweight title currently held by Sean Strickland.

The Brazilian enters a little further into the history of combat sports.
