Dana White has shared his thoughts on Sean O’Malley’s TKO victory over Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292.
Sean O’Malley (17-1 MMA) got his first shot at fighting for UFC gold tonight in Boston. “Suga” was returning to the octagon for the first time since his split decision victory over former bantamweight champion Petr Yan at UFC 280 in October last year. Prior to that, the 28-year-old fighter faced Pedro Munhoz in a fight that ended in a no contest due to eye-poke. Meanwhile, Aljamain Sterling (23-4 MMA) was looking to secure his fourth straight title defense when he took on Sean O’Malley.
The ‘Funkmaster’ was coming off a split decision victory over Henry Cejudo in his last fight at UFC 288. Prior to that, he defeated T.J. Dillashaw by TKO and won a split decision over Petr Yan in his first defense of title.
Dana White talks about the privileges of Sean O’Malley
Ahead of the title fight, Aljamain Sterling accused Sean O’Malley of having “Dana White privileges” and having an unworthy resume. These comments did not hold true, as it was “Suga” who emerged victorious from this fight by a second-round TKO.
After a tentative start from both men in round one, Sean O’Malley was able to catch Sterling with a right hand in round two that sent the ‘Funkmaster’ to the Octagon canvas. From there, “Suga” started unleashing those blows which eventually caused the referee to step in and end the fight. Sean O’Malley picked up a blowout victory that neither the fans nor the fighters saw coming.
When asked what he thought of Sterling’s result against O’Malley, UFC President Dana White said the following:
“Dana White privilege does not exist in this company. O’Malley got the title because he earned it. When you think about this fight and Sterling, you wonder how Sean can beat this guy… You never know, styles make the fights and things happen that you don’t always expect. »
