2023 Brasileiros results and highlights: Dalpra continues dominance, Hugo and Pessanha win double-gold

We look back at notable performances from Tainan Dalpra, Victor Hugo, and others at the 2023 Brasileiros.

The 2023 Brasileiros – one of the four “grand slam” tournaments on the IBJJF calendar – took place last week, with adult black belts competing over the weekend. For the most part, the podiums were dominated by established competitors and previous champions.

On the men’s side, Atos representative and brown belt Brasileiros champion Lucas Pinheiro made his triumphant return to Brazil, capturing gold in the roosterweight division. And in the light-featherweight division, ADCC champion Diogo “Baby Shark” Reis picked up his second Brasileiros title and extended his unbeaten streak that dates back to the 2022 IBJJF Worlds.

Also of note, 2022 world champion Isaac Doederlein impressed in the featherweight division to earn his second career Brasileiros gold and Alliance’s Gustavo Batista added his first Brasileiro title to his multiple IBJJF world titles.

In the middleweight division, Art of Jiu-Jitsu’s Tainan Dalpra once again looked flawless in extending his incredible unbeaten streak in IBJJF competition. Already a Pans and European champion this year, the 22-year-old will shoot for the grand slam at the IBJJF Worlds, set to go down in early June.

Additionally, two-time world champion Victor Hugo took home gold in both the ultra-heavyweight and openweight divisions, winning by submission in the finals of each.

Also, 2019 ADCC champion Bianca Basilio returned to pick up her fifth career Brasileiro gold, and in the lightweight division, legendary competitor Luiza Monteiro earned her first Brasileiro title since 2015.

Finally, Gabrieli Pessanha continued to dominate both the super-heavyweight and openweight divisions. The 22-year-old secured double-gold, extended her unbeaten streak that dates back to 2021, and has now earned double-gold at three of the four calendar grand slam tournaments.
